Speed limit in Byfleet Road to be reduced
Campaigners in Cobham who were hoping to see the speed limit reduced on an infamous road were disappointed to hear it was only reduced by 10mph at the Surrey Council Local Committee Meeting for Elmbridge held on December 8.
A majority vote by councillors saw the national speed limit be reduced to 50mph instead of the requested 30mph on Byfleet Road and the new speed limit will be imposed from the traffic lights at the junction with Seven Hills Road.
Due to the road being an A road officers at Surrey council's highway department would only allow it to be reduced to 50mph stating the the speed management policy would not allow the limit to be reduced further.
A petition of 308 signatures was handed to the council at a previous meeting by residents Dr Michael Moore and barrister Abdullah Al-Yunusi, who also received backing from Silvermere Golf Club, The Cobham Bus Museum and St George's Nursing Home, because of numerous accidents and one fatality occurring on the road.
The cost of making the traffic regulation order and installing the new signs would cost £5,000.
Cllr for Walton South and Oatlands, Roy Taylor, tried to stop the vote going ahead by requesting it be overturned. He said: "I want to throw this out. I think it is a waste of money to change the signs just by 10mph when there are better things money can be spent on like a safe crossing for school children in Oatlands Avenue."
However, other councillors were happy to vote ona reduction.
Cllr Ian Lake, for Weybridge, said: "I am disappopinted it couldn't be reduced further but I feel we grudgingly have to accept this as it is the best officers can do. We may have to review it further at a later date."
Surrey Police also stated while in consultation with officers that if the limit was reduced to 30mph they would object as they feel would not be appropriate.
The new speed limit will be included in the programme of works for 2009/10.
