Man lay dead in sheltered home for up to 10 days
Friends of a man who lay dead in his sheltered housing flat for up to 10 days are calling for an investigation into why it took so long for staff to discover his body.
John Daughters, 63, who died of liver cirrhosis, was found at his Windsor Court Road flat in Chobham on January 13 and his funeral was held in the village on February 21.
Another close friend, Bob Hill, 82, of High Street, Chobham, said: "I never saw John without a smile on his face. He was a good man and always had time for people.
"He did drink a lot and had done in all the time I knew him, but he was a happy man and I can't quite comprehend how it all ended like this. It does raise questions as to how someone in sheltered housing can be left without being found for more than a week. It's disgraceful."
Care home provider Accent Peerless runs Windsor Court, which consists of 19 one bedroom flats for the over 60s.
A spokesman for the company said Mr Daughters asked to be left alone by staff who normally check on residents daily.
He said: "The people living in our flats are given the choice to sign a waiver if they want to be left alone to say that they do not want daily visits from a supervisor from our staff.
"Mr Daughters signed the annual waiver every year since he arrived in 2005 and never wanted the daily contact that we offered, so out of respect for him, we did not visit him.
"As soon as concerns were raised about his welfare, we went to his flat, but there was no reason for us to go there before. Of course we extend our condolences to Mr Daughters' family and friends."
An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Woking Coroners Court.
